Gangliosidosis is a type of metabolic disorder that affects the muscles and nervous system, causing progressive dysfunction and impaired growth. This particular variant of the disorder (GM1), is caused by a recessive mutation to the gene GLB1, and occurs in the Shiba Inu. Related variants of GM1 Gangliosidosis are also found in the Portuguese Water Dog and Alaskan Husky.
Caratteristiche cliniche
I cani affetti sono generalmente caratterizzati da disfunzione cerebrale progressiva e compromissione della crescita fin dalla tenera età. I segni includono perdita di peso, atassia, andatura a base larga, diminuzione della propriocezione, tremore intenzionale della testa, ipermetria, dismetria, strabismo interno e nistagmo posizionale. I segni iniziano intorno alle 6-8 settimane di età e sono chiaramente evidenti entro i 7 mesi di età.
